Cavity-Combating Company Creating Jobs

An Indiana-based developer of technology aimed at providing dentists and patients with an early warning of dental decay announced today it plans to launch its cavity-combating technology this fall, creating up to 50 new jobs.

Therametric Technologies, an entrepreneurial developer of dental technology located in the Indiana University Emerging Technologies Center, is using a 2006 grant from the state's 21st Century Research and Technology Fund and follow-on funding from the National Institutes of Health and the universities of Iowa and Texas to conduct the final trials of its device.
"The 21st Century Fund is a powerful tool aimed at assisting new and innovative companies like Therametric Technologies bring cutting-edge technologies to the marketplace," said Governor Mitch Daniels.

Led by former Indiana University researcher Dr. George Stookey, Therametric's Professional Caries Detection System uses light fluorescence from a wireless handheld probe to detect dental caries by analyzing changes in the mineral content of tooth enamel. The system's probe relays data and images via a universal serial bus interface to a computer with software that pinpoints sites of impending decay up to two years before trouble spots could be located using traditional visual and x-ray examination methods.

"We are very excited about our Professional Caries Detection System and the role it will play in helping dental professionals provide optimal dental care for their patients," Stookey said. "Early detection of mineral loss from dental enamel can be reversed by professional fluoride treatments and prevent the later need for dental restorations."

Stookey, a member of the Indiana University faculty from 1964 to 2001, holds more than 40 U.S. and foreign patents including Therametric Technologies' Tartar Shield line of dental health treats for companion animals.

Caries are the most prevalent chronic disease for both children and adults, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The most recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that 92 percent of adults ages 20 to 64 and 42 percent of children ages two to 11 have had dental caries in their permanent teeth.

Therametric Technologies, which received a $646,000 grant in 2006 from the state's 21st Century Research and Technology Fund, is one of 54 businesses awarded a 21st Century Fund grant since January 2006. During that time, the fund has invested more than $68 million in high-tech Indiana entrepreneurial companies with the potential to create more than 6,000 new jobs.

About Therametric Technologies Inc.
Therametric Technologies Inc. is focused on the development of new innovative technologies for the detection and prevention of dental caries and other preventable dental maladies and the commercialization of these technologies for use in both humans and companion animals. There are presently four active divisions of TTI all located in the Indiana University Emerging Technologies Center on the Indiana University -Purdue University at Indianapolis campus.

Indiana Steel Plant to Double Production

ArcelorMittal (NYSE: MT) and Japan-based Nippon Steel Corporation announced today the global steel giants will expand their I/N Kote joint venture here, doubling its galvanized steel production and creating 100 new jobs by 2010.

The companies will invest more than $240 million to build and equip a 240,000-square-foot facility at the existing I/N Kote center in the North Central Indiana town to house a new continuous galvanizing line that will have an annual capacity of 480,000 tons.

"It's yet another big win for the Indiana economy, one with special excitement because it involves one of our longstanding leading corporate citizens. As we're seeing happen time and time again, companies like ArcelorMittal are choosing Indiana over many other states to do business because of our competitive tax climate, high-quality workforce and unmatched infrastructure," said Governor Mitch Daniels.

I/N Kote, which currently produces around 450,000 tons of galvanized and galvannealed steel annually at the site, will supply the new continuous galvanizing line with cold-rolled coils from ArcelorMittal's Indiana Harbor and Burns Harbor operations as well as ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel's operation in New Carlisle.

The companies, which plan to break ground on the project later this year, currently employ more than 200 in New Carlisle and plan to begin hiring operations and maintenance associates in late 2008 ahead of the new facility's planned opening in 2010

"This is a great day for I/N Kote, our employees, the city of New Carlisle and the state of Indiana," said Chris Richards, general manager of I/N Kote and its sister facility, I/N Tek in New Carlisle. "This is an exciting opportunity for all of our stakeholders as it allows us to further meet customer demand while bringing new jobs to our community and we thank our partners at the state and local levels for their essential support."

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered I/N Kote up to $4.8 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $100,000 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans. St. Joseph County will provide property tax abatement.

I/N Kote's expansion in New Carlisle is expected to preserve 400 jobs at ArcelorMittal operations in East Chicago and Burns Harbor and follows less than a year after Daniels met with Arcelor Mittal founder and chief executive Lakshmi N. Mittal in London as part of the governor's European trade mission.

Founded in 1991, I/N Kote is a 50-50 joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. The facility currently produces 450,000 tons (500,000 short tons) of hot-dip galvanized and galvannealed sheet and 360,000 tons (400,000 short tons) of electrogalvanized sheet annually.

The privately held company, which currently develops and manages physician and hospital-owned sleep disorder centers and durable medical equipment retail locations in 14 states, will invest more than $2.5 million to expand its Central Indiana headquarters and upgrade its computer hardware and software.

"Dormir joins a growing list of companies like Arcadia Healthcare, Really Cool Foods and Berry Plastics that have decided to grow their global headquarters in Indiana. The company's subsidiary, MD Sleep, provides physicians and hospitals with a turnkey solution to the design, development, construction, furnishing, staffing and ongoing management of their sleep centers. CardioSom focuses on treating patients with sleep apnea and provides patients with respiratory equipment including Continuous Positive Airway Pressure devices and Oxygen resulting in some of the highest compliance rates by patients in the country.
